Social Security provides one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 can be paid to the surviving spouse.

If you need to report a death or apply for benefits, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You can speak to a Social Security representative between 8:00 am – 5:30 pm. Monday through Friday

About

$225 death benefit one time lump sum for surviving spouse. If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who is eligible for benefits on the deceased’s record in the month of the death.

Audience:

Payments can be made to (1) paid to the surviving spouse if he or she was living with the deceased or (2) a spouse living apart from the deceased that was receiving certain Social Security benefits on the deceased’s record.
